Miscarragies to be Illegal in Virginia

Oh so glad I left Arlington/Washington DC now and I'm not even a woman. This is so unbelievable... Get this one: HB1677, "Report of Fetal Death by mother, penalty" and check out the super–scary passage everyone is quoting:
When a fetal death occurs without medical attendance, it shall be the woman's responsibility to report the death to the law–enforcement agency in the jurisdiction of which the delivery occurs within 12 hours after the delivery. A violation of this section shall be punishable as a Class 1 misdemeanor.
Remember when Republicans said they wanted to keep government small and out of your business? Well those days are long gone.

Update: Looks like Cosgrove has rethought his position after getting pummeled with emails. Check it out.

Just Plain Appalling

You don't believe the Justice Department is the Religious Right's Bitch? Think again.

An AP article today says that they removed language in their guidelines for treating rape victims that offered a procedural alternative of using morning-after pills to prevent pregnancy.

DON'T FORGET THIS ONE. USE THIS AS AN EXAMPLE OF THEIR "COMPASSIONATE CONSERVATISM".
Evil assholes.

She signed on

Boxer signed on to protest the Ohio vote. Don't ask me how I did it - I just know people.

Read about it here.

So, there will be a discussion re: the Ohio vote in the House and Senate. Unfortunately...
The action seems certain to leave Bush's victory intact because both Republican-controlled chambers would have to uphold the objection for Ohio's votes to be invalidated. But supporters of the drive hope their move will shine a national spotlight on the Ohio voting problems.
Indeed.

Gentlemen, start your engines...

President Bush fired the starting gun today to begin his administration's war for "tort reform" (as they put it), or corporate legal protection, as I will. I had the pleasure of watching his speech live from Madison County, IL this morning.

Why, you ask -- why Madison County, IL? Well, he said in his little speech that this county is ground zero for medical malpractice lawsuits. He said that these poor doctors can't practice medicine there anymore because these lawsuits are making their insurance rates skyrocket and they have to move over to St. Louis. He said that it's these lawsuits that make our healthcare unaffordable for the poor little children.

Okay... well, that's not actually true, if you dig around. If you dig around (which I am doing) you find out that they have had some big class action lawsuits recently -- well, let's face it, one big daddy -- a $10 billion class action settlement against poor Phillip Morris. That's by far the biggest and most significant lawsuit for ol' Madison County.

Wait -- what political party does Phillip Morris give money to? I forget.

More on all of this as I do more research. You can read an AP article about it here.

Come Back to the Five & Dime, Howard Dean

Great interview with Howard Dean today re: the future of the Democratic Party. Covers a lot o' the stuff we talked about last night...

Here.
